Aki Matsui was a student in 9th Grade Class 3 in 1998. She was good friends with Kyōko Kaneki and later would become one of the "Deaths of August".
Appearance[]
Aki was a pale girl of average height with a delicate face. She had dark brown chin-length hair with curtain bangs and dark brown eyes.
She was only ever seen wearing the standard female school uniform.
Personality[]
Aki was very shy and reserved, but calm and humble, and was almost always seen in the company of her best friend Kyōko Kaneki. It can be seen that she is prone to moments of anguish and anxiety, and when this happens, Kyōko takes it upon herself to comfort her friend and ensure her peace of mind. It is also shown that she is passionate about practicing sports, and more in the company of her friend.
Plot[]
Aki make many appearances in general like several of her classmates, and on each occasion she was seen in the company of her best friend, Kyōko. The two's first chronological appearance is in "The Other," spending the day at the same amusement park as Mei Misaki and her sister.
Aki was among the students who went on the class trip to the shrine, where she shared a room with Kyōko. In "Makeup" she and Kyōko heard Takako's broadcast, but unlike most of her peers, Aki did not actively seek Mei out, instead preferring to flee the now burning inn with Kyōko.
At some point in "Stand By Oneself", Aki suffered a breakdown, as when she and Kyōko are shown, Kyōko can be seen protectively wrapping her arms around Aki, apparently in an attempt to calm her. Unfortunately, the two encountered Tomohiko Kazami, who had come to the same conclusion as Takako, albeit with a much more macabre and ruthless approach. He stabbed Kyōko in the back with a knife she had stolen from the inn's kitchen, before attacking Aki, the knife was still dripping with her friend's blood. Horrified for her life, Aki fled and encountered Kōichi Sakakibara. Sobbing and scared, Aki begged Kōichi for help, but before he could react, Tomohiko threw his knife at the base of her neck. Aki died in Kōichi's arms, an expression of agony on her face.
Removing the knife from the still warm body of his classmate, Tomohiko nonchalantly asked Kouichi if he "remembered this girl". Furious, Kōichi replied yes. Undaunted after realizing that neither of them was the extra, Tomohiko prepared to attack Kōichi, leaving the corpse of the quiet girl in a pool of her own blood.
